Exclamation Operation: *Rear Seat Delete* Part 1...removal of rear seats!!

Since I didn't see any articles/tutorials/write-ups on how to do a rear seat removal on a 99-04 Mustang, on this site, I thought I'd write one up. Enjoy...

You will need:

Flat-head Screwdriver
15mm Open-Ended Wrench
10mm Socket
8mm Socket
1/4" Drive Rachet
A little bit of patience



Step 1:

Find your back seat...



Ahhh, there it is. (yes, the indentations on my seat backs are front my seat belts...I always have the seat backs down...to cool the amplifiers)

Step 2:

Locate the tabs at the top of the floor board and below the seat lip that hold the seat down... (see green arrows)



Step 3:

After you find the tabs, push them in with a screwdriver and lift the rear seat up... (see green arrows)




Step 4:

Remove the tabs. You will need an 8mm socket and a 1/4" drive socket to do this... (this will alow your rear seat delete kit to fit flush with the carpet when it's installed)



Step 5:

Remove seat backs. You will need a 15mm Open-Ended wrench to do this... (in order to access these bolts **outside only** you will need to pull the leather away at the far bottom left **passenger's side** seat and far bottom right **driver's side** seat.)

Step 6:

Remove the entire seat brace... (see neon green box)



1-10mm bolt on each side...




and 3-8mm bolts along the top




And then 2 more 8mm bolts along the top, under the large hear rest you just removed (yes, I forgot the green arrows...but if you really need them to understand this, have your smart cousin do this whole thing for you! )



Pull the whole brace out...



**I had all of my stereo and nitrous line and wires run into my truck and they went OVER the brace...well...when you take that brace off, it's one big piece, and it's welded together. So you can do 1 of a few things...

1.) Break the brace and slide the wires out
2.) Cut the brace and slide the wires out
3.) Undo most/all of the wiring, take the brace out, and wire the stuff back up (I did this one)
4.) Say "PISS ON THIS" and put everything back together.

Here's what it will look like after the brace and seats are off... (minus the metric ass load of A/V equipment)







I hope to have a one-off rear seat delete kit all done and in my car by7 tomorrow evening. Stay tuned for progress and completed pix of that but Wednesdat or so. I hope...

How much weight does this shed off? And will it make a big difference on times?

its about 50 lbs...there is a kit u can buy its like the cobra R kit but better..i was thinking of maybe doing it.

maybe if he took all the audio stuff out... but al that looks like a nice setup im sure that sounds sweet.

lol i had a lil 10in xplod in my trunk with some xplod amp but took it out when i went to the track a while back and never put it back it.

100 lbs is worth a about a tenth.

On another note, the spelling errors in Al's post are atrocious, you been drinking , lol

UR2SLW, I could go out and buy one of the pre-made kits, but I'm not doing so for a few reasons...

1.) I need to make one that will have a window in the wall that will allow cool air to come in through the ruck to cool the amplifiers. The wall will cover the open area in my amp rack and still wrap around the entier seat frame...cleaning up the ugliness seen from inside the car when the seats are out.
2.) A LOT o those pre-fab ones are made with shitty material and put together very poorly
3.) I can make a custom one for much less than what one would cost new, and it will be much better quality.
4.) It's one more thing that I get to say that I did...not bought or paid someone else to do.

Mike, spelling errors be damned. I was in a hurry to get the article written up and copied and pasted on a couple of boards. My wife and daughter were on their way home and I wanted to spend time with the vs playing on the web. Feel free to correct the spelling errors before you move this to "write-up" forum...if you feel the need to do so.

Steve Starnes, while this is a "weight-reduction" mod, you can see that the 150+lbs of A/V shit behind it will not help with weight-reduction. I did save over 100lbs with the IRS to Solid axle swap, and I'm probably going to pull my spare tire and jack out of the trunk tomorrow. I'm seriously considering doing a pretty extensive overhaul of my trunk and all the A/V shit in it this winter. I might build a custom fiberglass box with the sub recessed into where the spare tire is/was and flush mounting all the amps to really clean the look up. The fiberglass will be significantly lighter than the MDF that I used on the amp rack and subwoofer box. But we'll see. That shit takes time and money...both of which I might not want to spend on A/V shit this winter.
