Camaro production to return to Canada

Once again the Chevrolet Camaro will be assembled in Canada, this time in Oshawa!

Souce: Reuters
TORONTO (Reuters) - GM Canada said on Monday it will build the new Camaro at its plant in Oshawa, Ontario, where workers earlier this year agreed to job cuts to try to secure production of the reborn muscle car.

The automaker said production of the Camaro, a classic muscle car of the 1960s and 1970s, is scheduled to begin in late 2008 with sales expected in the first quarter of 2009.

General Motors of Canada said changes to its Oshawa plant, which will include a new flexible production line, will cost C$740 million ($661 million).

"The Oshawa car plant has been selected as the plant to manufacture one of GM's most celebrated new vehicles, the Chevrolet Camaro," GM Canada president Arturo Elias said in his announcement that Oshawa had won the contract.

Earlier this year, workers at Oshawa, members of the Canadian Auto Workers union, agreed to 2,500 early retirements to trim operating costs at Oshawa, which is about an hour's drive east of Toronto.

Not that im crazy about the new camaro but im glad to see it going back into production. Hopefully GM can keep the price down and comparible to the mustang. If not i dont think it has much of a chance.

Either way im happy to see the Camaro coming back :gears:

wouldn't surprise me..but if thats the case i think its gonna flop just like the GTO did. GTO is a pretty bad ass car but at 35k or so not many people can swing it. atleast not the age group that are mostly intrested in the car

The Camaro needs to be priced pretty close to the Mustang to sell the numbers they are talking about.

The GTO failed for a few reasons, lack of styling and price. With what GM had to work with, the Holden Monaro, it was not possible to make it and import it here to the US and keep the price under $30K. While it was not affordable to the younger market, it was a nice bang for under $40K with LS1 performance and RWD chassis, something GM fans have not seen since 2002.

This car is not just a rebadged Holden, it is engineered from the ground up with Camaro in mind. It won't be anything like the last GTO IMO :D

i wasnt trying to compare it to the GTO in anyway.. i agree that the GTO definatly lacked in the styling department..but the price was definatly to high..

No worries here, even with the 7 year head start, the Blue Oval will be playing catchup

Hmmm, by the time the Camaro comes out, I'll have about 150k miles on the stang so might be time to look for a new car anyway.... and a little variety never hurts.
