I still haven't gotten my water pump in (my car is some how set up for a 68-69 water pump and accories) Well anyways just in case with out the water pump on I started my motor and it still freaking rattles!!!!!! I used my trusty breaker bar and placed it against my timing cover and felt no unusal rattles but on my harmonic balancer I could feel out of place slight tap, I'm not sure though because the I was laying the breaker bar on a spinning balancer. I just know I felt a out of place rattle. Could it be the harmonic balancer? I know the day before this noise started I was racing (messed up a couple valve keeper keys too). Could have I destroyed my harmonic balancer? Is there anyway to tell without buying a new one (I'm getting tired of buying parts I don't really need) By the way as far as I know this is the original harmonic balancer, and if it is it has about 175,000 miles on it.

If the balancer is causing the knock, you would be able to see it wobble. Are you sure all your torque converter bolts are tight. When you had the motor out, did you check any of your bearings.

I pulled the converter a little while ago, the it looks like the outter piece is slightly tilted on the inner section, theres also a scrape mark on there so I checked under the timing marks and theres no paint, no dirt, no rust, just shiney metal. I painted it before I put the motor in so it was hitting that the whole time. Time for a new balancer I guess
