View Full Version : I have a few questions regarding springs and such...

So, here's my dilemna. When I bought my Cobra the car was plagued with terrible ass sag and the front end looked as if the car was always doing a hard launch or I had a dead body or 2 in the trunk. This is a very common problem with the 99 and 01 Cobras...and GTs for that matter. So, being that I was new to the whole "performance" end of car mods, I ordered the only Eibach springs that were available for the Cobra...the ProKit. I ordered this kit without thinking about the ass end of the car already having Koni Adjustable Coilovers out back. The difference bewteen the ProKit and the Sportline kit (aside from the Sportline sitting much lower) was that the Sportline kit would not fit the Cobra...solely because the Cobra has an IRS.

So, what I need to know is:

1.) Can or should I have the front springs cut to get the front end even lower? (not going for the lowrider look here, I just want to make the car look and ride even more aggressive)
2.) How much should I cut if I want to drop another 3/4" - 1" or so?
3.) Who do you know that might be able to do this for me (I have lack of cutting tools and expertise on this matter)
4.) Would anybody be willing to trade their front Sportlines for my ProKit springs. (Do you think that your car is too low up front?)
5.) Is anybody looking to buy some BRAND NEW Eibach ProKit REAR springs? They have never been out of the box!

The ProKit is said to give you a 1.25" inch brop or so...

Here is how the car sits right now...

I have a little bit more room to lower the ass end via the Coilovers if need be.

And here is how the car sat before I threw the front springs on and adjusted the rear a bit...

cut about 4 coils out of the back and set them on high ;)

Cutting coils is a very tricky thing. You must use a cut off wheel, not a torch. It is completely cut and fit, there is not set formula because it depends on spring rates, stack heights, etc. You also must make sure that the cut end still fits the spring perch properly. Some cars need a certain bend or angle at each end to seat properly. If youre gonna go ahead and cut them, start small, maybe 1/3 of a coil, then reassemble and check ride height. Remember too, that shortening the spring is going to increase spring rate, so expect it to be stiffer when your done.

keep in mind if you cut off coils you reduce payload capacity and can disrupt the spring rate. Cutting a full coil off can reduce the height by almost a full 35/50 mm or 1.5-2.'' . Reducing payloads depending on spring rate somewhere between 160 -210 lbs.may not be something you want to do. Rear wheel squat on launches may not be satisfactory for both DD duty or performance times.
Heating up the spring reduces the integrity and shortens the life of the spring. I know you picked up these springs recently but you may want to consider another manufacture and sell what you have before you make them unsellable. Progress springs has many applications for your yr mustang along with swaybar upgrades. these setups are even Autox capable putting the control back in the drivers hands. Let us Know al if theirs anything we can do for you on those.

I sold my Eibach's and I am doing coilovers up front. The rear currently has Koni coilovers and it's staying that way.

Al's payload is already over capacity... .!.

The issue with the grommets on the rear coilovers is being handle buy Griggs Racing Products. I just need to pull the wheels off and take a pic or two of the exact setup I have (they changed the design to kit they made for the 99 Cobra) and that annoying clunking will be remedied.

Thanks again for your help on that.

If all goes as planned, my car's stance will look like this by Saturday of next week.

***The tailight and healdights were darked to show the tinted tails and 2003 Cobra headlights that are on the car right now. My digital camera is still messed up and I haven;t taken any worthwhile side shots in some time***
