Cary Goforth’s decision to use his father’s car for the ADRL Hardee’s Independence Drags IV at Heartland Park Topeka over the weekend ultimately proved to be the right move. But he may not have that choice for the ADRL Inaugural Texas Drags on July 23-24 from Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, TX.Goforth’s father, Dean, suffered an unfortunate non-racing related injury in the pits at the ADRL Ford Drive One Summer Drags VI in June and was immediately put in a massive cast for the next day’s final eliminations. He missed the race in Topeka, and Cary chose to drive his father’s car in Extreme Pro Stock. The payoff wasn’t immediate - Cary was No. 15 and dead last in qualifying after Friday - but it paid off the next day as he shot to the top of qualifying with a 4.13 at the rain-shortened race.“We felt like dad’s car was better, so we switched this weekend,” Goforth said. “Our last run on Friday was too aggressive, but it felt good. We knew we could get a good number if we drove it right.“The number surprised us but we’ll take it. The jump from last to first feels really good.”As for his father, Cary noticed he had to play a role that doesn’t suit him.“It was different. He had to be the cheerleader and he’s not as good at that,” Cary said. “He didn’t like it.”But Cary said Dean’s absence might not be for long.At the worst, Dean hopes to return for the ADRL Hardee’s Gateway Drags III at Gateway International Raceway in August, and he may be able to get behind the wheel for the Texas Drags in less than three weeks. That may seem amazing, but Dean was anxious to get back to racing immediately after the accident. After a step on their trailer was damaged at a gas station, Dean slipped on the step carrying hamburgers off the trailer on the Friday of the Summer Drags, breaking bones and putting him in a cast that nearly covered his entire leg.Still, he didn’t want to miss any time and even tried to race the next day in Michigan.“I told (the doctor) two times I was going to drive the car tomorrow,” Dean said during an interview in Michigan. “The doctor said no, but I told him I was going to drive.“When I woke up, I was in a cast up to my hip.”Dean knew it would cost him in the points standings, but he’s hoping a quick return will help make up for the missed race.http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ADRLNews/~4/I8UT_i_rjsU
