View Full Version : The Mustang that started it for me

Nitrous Rick blew the fucking doors off my 1988 GTA with his old black convertible one evening down Van Dyke. Probably 1997 or 1998. It was a rediculous ass whooping. I thought my high 13 second F-body was the shit. A few months later I found an 88 Mustang GT that was completely stock with t-tops and "love it or hate it" purple paint. It went 14.4 @ 96 all stock.
I did the usual step-by-step bolt-ons. headers, exhaust, gears, pulleys... It went 13.8@101. I get some Weld's, a big cowl hood, Cobra intake and a 75 shot from a dry kit. It was going 12.8's @108.

I spend a couple weeks in the garage getting it ready for paint. Then removed all the lights and trim and drove it to Maaco for a $480 paint job. It was a night and day difference for the car.

I saved up enough for a set of Trick Flow heads, converted it to mass air, and put in an E cam. It was now going 12.0's @ 112 on motor and 11 teens at 122 spraying 150 through the same dry kit. I got sick of splitting T5's, so I went to a C4 with a 3500 stall converter and went from a GT-40 intake to a Systemax. I also got rid of the nitrous and went to the brand new Paxton Novi 1000 pullied up for 8 psi. I got one 10.8 @128 out of it before they booted me off the track for not having a cage.
I got a roll cage and a divorce at about the same time. I moved into an apartment in Shelby Twp. My car was stolen after living there about 2 weeks. It was never recovered.
I've had a few other ones but this was by far my favorite. Hopefully my new one will be at least as respectible as this car was.
Pics of the others.

How was just an engine stolen? Out of your garage or something?
It still pisses me off to think about it. I ran up to Taco Bell in my work van at about 2 a.m., came home 20 minutes later and the car was gone. I had the fuel system disabled, and the rotor even removed from under the cap.
Ironically, the convertible LX in the background was stolen the same night. Here is what I get to work with now:

i went on vacation and somebody broke into my garage and took my motor off the engine stand. didnt touch anything else, i had my whole car taken apart, moved a ton of shit out of the way and slid the engine off the stand and took it. i did get it back about 2 years later though, same way even had the stand part bolted to the block still.

After you haven't posted for a while and I see your name I smile since I know it's partly because of me. :D The GTA was a cool car, it just wouldn't go fast no matter what you did to it.

I remember your titanium car, Rob. That thing was badass. It sure didn't look like a $400 paint job from what I remember.
I also remember when I read about it getting ripped off. Fucking dirtbag thieves!!!

We were at Ubly on day and I was busting of some decent passes for back then. After he found out how much I had in my car I think he was sold. I remember we pulled the seats out of the GTA and all kind of crazy stuff trying to get it to run a number that day!

Rob does your buddy Steve(I think that was his name) have that green couple still?
Exgmguy

Steve does still have the green car. He has not driven it in years and now has it on Craigslist for 6 grand or trade for a Jeep TJ. His car is very nice and put together well.
Your black convertible did it for me. A basic 302 with a decent tire running deep in the 12's on the motor. Shit, back then most 12 second cars came in on trailers!

I thought the paint turned out great. People were pretty suprised that Maaco did it.

I miss that car, last picture is the first time it was ever on a trailer and one of the few times really. Nothing like driving to and from the track with the top down! I have to dig through some time slips I can't remember what my fastest nitrous pass was now, I know it went 11 teens on motor and I think 10.3x or .4x on a small shot.

How fast did that thing go with a 302 in it? I am hoping for mine to go 12's on the motor and lower 11's on a 150 shot.

It never ran really great with the 302 compared to 302's today. I think it went 12.4x around 109 or 110 on motor and mid 11's on a 125 or 150 shot. That was a long time ago so I'm not 100% on the numbers but thats close.

Rick's car doesn't need or use 500hp of nitrous to go around LS1 cars. In fact, I'm pretty sure it goes 10.30's on motor with a stock block and out of the box heads

This is just the wrong board for you to preach LS1 over small block Ford. It might work on other boards, but all the Fords here are fast :)

drivability FTW:cool:then dont take em to a race track, if its on the race track it only has to run for a 1/4mile. i dont talk shit to guy who run nascar cause i know my shit wont run 500miles at 9000rpms, but it will run at the drag strip so ill race a nascar anyday at the dragstrip.
my story is the opposite, i had an 86 gt (4 eyed pride ftw) with usual bolt ons, gear, tire. and got my ass whooped by an LS1 camaro. my mustang ended up getting rear ended hard by a douche bag in a van.
i got an LS1 car. im trying to go fast, but everybody else still seems to be faster

How does a good running 302 go today? I had mine going 12.0's-12 teens when we all did the Motown gathering at St. Thomas a few years back. I don't remember seeing any 302's going that fast on motor at the time. At least in person anyway.
I'll be very happy with 12's on the motor.
For now. :)

With the cylinder head/camshaft advancements since I had that motor together I think you can get the cars to run high 11's if the car is set up properly. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it was a pig but I think I could do better today.

Did you have a Performer RPM intake and Edelbrock heads on the 302?
On a side note, I may have to pick your brain in the spring. It has been about 15 years since I have tried tuning a Holley in.
Rick, I found those old pictures of my silver car buried on the Mustangworks site. 87351Vert was your name....

about 8 years ago i had a 302, stock short block with solid roller cam, out of the box tfs hi ports, 750hp carb and it went 11.20 on motor. ran it on 93 octane. 5 speed, 4.56 gear, shifted it at 8,000

It had an RPM intake for a while but switched to a Vic. Jr. in the end with box stock RPM heads with the 2.02 valve. I just used an x cam with it.
I totally forgot about mustangworks, I'll have to check it out again. I used that same name for corral and stangnet also.

I spent a ton of time on the Mustangworks site. That site has zero traffic now. That sucks. I used to document every street race on that site. I bought a lot of parts and learned a ton through that site.
