Just got word that one of my favorite drag cars, the SkinnyKid 72 Hurst Olds ProMod, was in a racing accident in Bradenton FL today. The driver, Brian Robbins is banged up but otherwise ok, but the car suffered major damage after hitting both walls. Apparently the dry sump oil tank ruptured, causing Brian to lose control and strike both retaining walls. Im sure that Keith(skinnykid) will rebuild the car. By the way, they qualified 10th out of 28 at 6.668 and 208mph.

That sucks.
I saw that happen one time. The fitting on the oil line for the dry sump broke, the guy lost it but did a real good job of controlling it. Only hit one wall with minor damage.

Still waiting on an update, apprently it was down track according to the amount of damage, and they took the driver to the hospital directly from the car, and had him completely checked out. Maybe some pics will show up, if so I post them.

This is the latest update:
Brian Robbins update
I just finished speaking with Brian Robbins and he asked me to clarify a few things about his accident yesterday at Bradenton. First, he is fine. The incident occurred not in eliminations. After losing in an earlier round a few racers were allowed to take test hits during downtime yesterday afternoon. Two of those drivers were Robbins and Tim O’Hare (who also lost in an early round). O’Hare and Robbins line up together, but did not leave together at the start. According to Robbins, when he pulled second gear, the dry-sump tank apparently split open pouring oil under the rear tires of the car. At that point he was along for the ride. The car quickly crossed the centerline and impacted the opposite lane guardrail nearly head-on, bounced off, crossed the centerline striking the guardrail in the other lane. Robbins said that had he and O’Hare left at the same time, he may have hit O’Hare’s car when the car first crossed the line. The car came to rest past the finish line. Robbins says he and Keith Engling have briefly looked at the chassis and upon first inspection the car looks as if it could be repaired, but the true extent of the damage won’t be known until they have a chance to get it back to Engling’s shop and on the jig. Either way, according to Robbins, the team is probably done for 2005.

You mean the one at 13 and Kelly? :D Wrong year, doesnt matter, thats all hand laid. Keith is a master with fiberglass. And body, and chassis. Ive seen a couple of his other Olds' that he's had over the years(before he started SkinnyKid). Over the top quality work.

Because it was between rounds, no one was video taping, so no pictures have shown up yet, and dont know if they will. Ive been checking around, but nothing so far. The car is back here in Michigan already, but no updates on Skinnys web site either.

Thats one thing about a SkinnyKid car, you can expect it to do its job. I'll guarantee that its a mess under the body. Big problem is its a one off custom body that Keith made, so its not like he can just order another and have it delivered.

I met Keith along time ago before he started SkinnyKid(I know his wife), when he was working out of his garage doing body work, and building his own SuperGas car(72 H/O, suprised). He was just finishing up his 70 Cutlass Pace car. His work for the mustang crowd has really helped him.
