So I have a set of 3.73 that are going in next Sunday... and then today I was looking at this neat gear calculator spreadsheet someone made.... 4.10 aren't THAT bad RPM wise... can't go much faster than 60MPH on the way to work nowadays anyway which puts rpm at 2172 instead of 1976 with the 3.73.. which doesn't seem over the top to me... think the only complaints I've heard from people about 4.10 is the mileage... with 4.10 it would shift sometime around 37MPH instead of 40MPH with 3.73.. seems like a small difference to me..

What do you all think? I want better acceleration without breaking the motor and don't care about gas mileage... 4.10 safe?

Higher revs= more wear on drivetrain/engine parts....

True.. but I wonder if maybe the difference in RPM is small enough that it might be worth it for the extra SOTP feel of the car...

Then you're gonna need some sticky tires.. Not exactly daily driver material. Well, not as much as you drive at least

My new job is like 20 miles away on slow 2 lane roads.. practically next door. :D

Haha, well, on a more serious note, I think gears are like one of those things... if you get the "safer" choice, you'll always wonder what it'd have been like if you'd had the balls to try the more agressive ones...

Well, I know enough to not try that before stickier tires...

Well, I think I just read every thread on mustangforums.com about gears... no one seemed to have anything negative to say about 4.10s with autos except gas mileage or possibly at high speeds... since I enjoy 0-70 alot more than 70-140 I think my choice is made. :D

LoL since we are on the topic, what would be best for my 1996 Mustang GT 5 speed?

it's a stick and a gear biggie that that will actually hurt you, more than help due to the gearing in the tranny.

Look here DICK!!! hahaha

If you have a 5 speed the rule of thumb us 3.73, if you have an auto 4.10-4.11. The reason is 1st gear is so short on the 5 speeds it becomes useless with anything more than a 3.73 on the street.

I have never used this sign thingy before.... It Rocks BABY - Coolest thing since sliced bread

I have .373 in my Chevelle and it seems to be perfect for my driving. Very Minimal Highway, but some (at 65mph I am at about 2600 rpms)! Now my bro has a 410 (65mph = about 3K rpms )and it whines in my opinion to high for highway use but pulls like a mofo out of the hole. Fun forsure but I like my gear better for all round as it may only see the strip one time just to see what it will do. Then back to cruis-in with the Fam!

With my auto in OD (5th gear) I wouldn't hit 3K until 83 MPH with 4.10s... I think it'd be worth it to keep it below 80 on highways for the extra fun when going slower. :D

Obligatory Sign

Yes with 5th or an Overdrive like an 700R4 I would have the 4.10 forsure, but I have a TH400 auto. Big difference!

My car came with 355 gears. I know have 410's and at 75 mph my RPM's went up about 300. The off the line feeling made it worth it. :D

HAHA, with my whimpy 261rwhp my first is useless.... somtimes second too...lol

Drag radials help out alot in teh summer.... I kinda wish FRpp made a 3.90 gear... that would be my choice :)

With an auto go with 4.10's, but i dont know about the 05's, but with the sn's you had to get the computer chipped to get the trans to shift right after the gear swap.

You're still gonna want sticker tires to take advantage of the added tq mulitplication. :)

Seems the consensus on most forums for the 05 automatic is to get 3.73 with blower, and 4.10 n/a... some people with 3.73s say 4.10s are too much, but everyone with 4.10s loves them... and gear ratio is easily adjusted in the tune with the Xcal2 I got from Lidio. :)

As for sticky tires... won't that make it harder to leave 50 feet tire marks everywhere I go?

It all depends on rim size. The Marauder came stock with 3.55, some members go with 3.73 for the middle of the road.

I prefer the 4.10. For tires, I like stock. Too sticky means more things break.

Good point.. I think I'll be content with whatever times I run on my street tires rather than put the extra stress on it with slicks at the track... not like my car would be a race car even with sticky tires.

Research and you'll find what most guys running are 4:30's with an automatic , 3:73"s are a waste unless you going forced air. This is not a 5 litre here its a modular motor, thing have changed from the 80's and 90's if you go less than 4:10 you'll be sorry. I gained 0.40 in the 1/4 from gears alone on street tires with no other mods.
