Didn't Buford T. Justice have one of those?

Actually, they made a cooler looking version which was the original Grand Am.

The Can Am was another cool version of the '70's LeMans. I believe it was only available for '77, which was also the last year for that car's platform.:( I hated those big bumpers though, which were prevalent in that era because of government crash standards.

Yep. 1977 only, and very limited production, Trivia, anybody know why production was cut??

Just a hunch, but it probably had something to do with the actual CanAm race series, and Pontiac using their name and not paying royalties.

Nope, not even close, it's a GM classic move.

It must have been some lame reason (GM). I do know the reason they quit making the Impala SS in '96 was so they could make SUV's at the Texas plant...

The mold for the rear spoiler broke, and management decided it wasnt worth repairing, so they discontinued the option. Now, considering that the following 2 years were some of the best ever for the Trans Am, I think Pontiac could have sold quite a few of these to guys who wanted a T/A, but needed a larger car.

More trivia, what were the only 2 engines available in a Can Am

The 400 (6.6L) for sure. I hope they didn't put the Olds 403 in it like they did some Trans Ams.

Ding-Ding, 49 State emissions got the Pontiac 6.6 and California and High altitudes got the "Corporate" 403 Olds motor. I wonder how many of those ever got made, I'd snag one and drop a 455 instead of the 403

I was hoping it wasn't true. I believe that the stick shift Trans Ams got the Pontiac motor and the autos got the Olds "6.6L" (not sure exactly why).

Oh well, chalk up another blunder to GM's credit...

The difference in motors was level of emissions, GM had to get EPA certifiacation for each motor/trans combo. The 403/auto was already california certified, so rather than go thru another combo approval(expensive) on a motor that was being phased out, they just used the Olds"Corporate" motor.

believe it or not everything that the auto company do is for a certain reason. may seem completly stupid to us but at the time there was a reason..just most of the time its over $$$
